Dawn of Titans is a mobile game from Natural Motion and Zynga and at the start of 2014 I produced this key art for the game at Realtime UK . Stu Bayley was my Art Director on this.
The main challenge was organization. Models were all posed and setup in Maya and ported to 3DS Max for layout and rendering in V-ray. I used object ID and multisub Texture to simplify the shading so there was just one shader per species.
There 8 categories of soldiers and within each category there was 5 classes. I made about 10 poses per species and ended up with a lot of variation, almost 300 distinct models. The models were them scattered using Max's paint tools. I needed to control orientation and positioning. Vray proxies were used for everything.
The closer characters and the hero characters including the Cat Riders were posed individually and placed manually to suit the narrative.
